Wood chip pioneer mourned

Alec Paul Franz will be fondly remembered.

THE community mourns the sudden passing on Sunday of wood chip pioneer, Alec Franz.

Alec, who was born in Durban in 1947 to Gotliep and Gladys Franz, arrived in Richards Bay in 1979 to establish the town’s first wood chip plant.

A prominent business figure, he managed his operation around the world, often being invited to speak and share his expertise at international seminars.

Alec retired five years ago and started his own wood chipping consultancy company, spreading his experience to all who needed it.

Although extremely well-travelled, Alec’s home and heart remained in Zululand with his family and friends.

He was married to Lesley, who passed in 1998 when he became the only parent figure for their sons Herman, Carl, Vernon and Alister .

Besides being a family man, Alec was popular as a humble and friendly person who always had the time to assist and guide friends and family.

He was also a sports fanatic and in his younger days was extremely involved in baseball, softball and soccer, playing for Natal and coaching youth at the Richards Bay and Errico Park soccer clubs.

He later became an avid hockey supporter to Alister and Vernon and their friends, following them on many tours around the country.

Enjoying life to the full, whether on his fishing boat or with his beloved new grandchildren, Alec won the hearts of all who knew him.

Zululand is the poorer for losing a man of his calibre.

The funeral service will take place on Saturday, 30 August at 10am at the St Francis Catholic Church in Veldenvlei.
