MEDICAL practitioners and staff at Caredoc in Richards Bay dressed in pink as a sign of support and solidarity with their cancer patients today (Friday). What made the event especially noteworthy was that among those who dressed up was Dr Frank van Niekerk – a man well-known for his dislike and disdain of the colour pink. So opposed has he been to that colour, that over the years he has refused to play golf with or against any player wearing pink, and would wait for them to find another ‘more manly’ shade of garment. This was well documented in a golfing article written by fellow golfer Garth Macartney. ‘I decided to forego my principles on this occasion, given the significance of the cause we are supporting by wearing pink today,’ said Frank, who looked quite dapper in revealing the more gentle side of his personality.
