Let the games begin
Athletes battle it out for a spot in the Northern Coastal team.
BLISTERING speed, towering heights and momentous jumps were the order of the day on Saturday at Veldenvlei Primary School, when athletes from all over Zululand competed at the annual Northern Coastal Sub-Junior Athletics trials.
Parents and spectators were kept entertained, as the children battled it out for a spot in the Northern Coastal team that will compete in Durban at the Sub-Juniors Competition at Kings Park Stadium.
Two children per age group were selected for the field and short track events, with three athletes per age group being chosen for the long distance track events.
The selected pupils will compete in one of four leagues in Durban to receive their Zululand colours and two out of four to attend the KZN Sub-Junior Championships on 25 November.
League 1 will be on 23 August, league 2 on 6 September, league 3 on 20 September and league 4 on 27 September.
The athletes competed in the following events on the day – long jump, high jump, shot put, hurdles, 1200m, 1500m, 60m, 80m, 100m, 880m, 150m and 200m.
