Serial rapist faces the law

The man raped 10 women at gunpoint in eSikhaleni.

ESIKHALENI serial rapist, Bongani Innocent Gumede (25) was found guilty on 10 counts of rape and nine of robbery.

Gumede is expected to re-appear at Ngwelezane Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (Friday) where he will be sentenced accordingly.

Arrested in 2012 for armed robbery, Gumede, while in police custody, was linked as the main suspect in several rape cases following an extensive investigation; consequently adding to his charges.

Gumede made his first court appearance in the same year of his arrest and was denied bail.

He has since remained in custody at Qalakabusha Correctional Services and is expected to stay there until his sentencing.

According to Empangeni SAPS Spokesperson, Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, all the rape victims are from eSikhaleni.

‘The women Gumede raped are of various age groups, including minors. He would threaten them with a gun and keep it pointed at them while he raped them. When he was done, he would rob them of their possessions,’ said Mdlalose.

‘Justice will be served and we are sending out a strong warning to all rapists that the abuse of our women and children will under no circumstances be tolerated,’ he added.
