Lifeline for Cancer patients

Cancer support group calling for new members.

THE Zululand Cancer Support Group is on a mission to gain community interest, increase its member base and incorporate a variety of exciting and beneficial additions to the monthly meetings.

The free monthly LifeLine meetings have been running for more than a decade with Netcare The Bay Hospital as a partner, and are open to all cancer patients, survivors and their families.

They are offered guidance and help from LifeLine trained volunteers and members voluntarily share their stories and experiences with each other, allowing counsellors to walk the journey with them. ‘A sound body bears a sound mind,’ said LifeLine facilitator, Lal Kowlas, at a recent meeting.

Physicians, health care service providers and motivational speakers address members of the cancer support group with the option of class discussions about sensitive issues and alternative treatments.

The information gained from the talks about specific topics aids to increase members’ knowledge and understanding on the subject.

Topics range from health and wellness, emotional, spiritual and physical wellness, homeopathy, naturopathy, social activities and life coaching.

The previous session was about physical exercise and guest speaker, Lorraine Miller from Body Line Studios, gave a talk on the benefits of exercise for cancer patients and how it can reduce risks of breast cancer and colon cancer and increase the quality of life. The session ended with a fantastic Salsa workout.

The group meet on the first Wednesday of every month at 6.30pm at Netcare The Bay Hospital.
