Quinton on top of the world

Empangeni swimmer achieves world number one status in the short course S5 and SB3 categories.

FROM a near drowning incident as a young boy and being declared clinically dead, but surviving, to a number one world ranking in swimming – this is the truly inspirational journey of Zululand disabled swimmer Quinton Harris.

He has achieved world number one status in the short course S5 and SB3 categories for 50m and 100m breaststroke and backstroke events, as well as world number two status for 50m and 100m freestyle in the S5 short course category.

Harris, who competed at the SA Short Course Championships in Pietermaritzburg at the weekend, bettered the South African and African records for the Class S5 50m and 100m freestyle and backstroke events, as well as the SB3 50m and 100m breastroke events.

After smashing six out of six records at the championships, Harris received his world number one and two rankings.

Harris has been training hard and put through his paces by coach Claire Swan and manager Ryan Vermaak.

‘We would really like to thank Zoe Sloane and the Zululand community for always supporting Quinton,’ said Vermaak.
