GRANTHAM Park Primary School was abuzz all weekend with sensational soccer action, when 16 schools took to the fields to battle it out for the 2014 U13 Build It Soccer Tournament crown.

The Cup Final saw defending champions Richardia School beaten in a penalty shootout by 2014 champions Glencoe Primary School, who tested Richardia’s defence and keeper all game long.

The Plate Final saw hosts Grantham Park snatch the silverware when they beat Dundee.

This year was the third annual tournament, which saw the likes of David Jenkins, The Dorks and The Nerds entertaining the sponsors, coaches, staff and players on Friday evening. The Empangeni High School band opened the tournament with an impressive marching precession.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday was action packed, with all the teams showcasing great individual skill and team play.

Each game was tightly contested with no team giving away any inches.

Grantham Park Primary School player Bandile Chunga was awarded the Player of the festival award.

Amazulu Football Club was present the whole weekend, with main sponsor Jackie Pillay of Build It and Brand Equity owner Les Pillay soaking up the sun and enjoying a fine soccer performances.

This year’s competing teams were Grantham Park (hosts), Heuwelland, Zululand Remedial Centre, Empangeni Preparatory School, Empangeni Christian School, Veldenvlei, Richardia (defending champions), Illembe, Ingweni, Pheshaya, Shwashweni, Glencoe (2014 champions), Dundee, Matshana, Paul Pietersburg and Emasangweni.

Cup Final – 1 Glencoe, 2 Richardia and 3 Illembe

Plate Final – 1 Grantham Park, 2 Dundee and 3 Pheshaya

Top Goalkeeper – Smangaliso Vundla (Matshana Primary)

Top Goal Scorer/Striker – Linda Khanyile (Dundee Primary School)

Player of the festival – Bandile Chunga (Grantham Park Primary School)
