A RELIEVED KwaMbonambi family welcomed the sentencing of an 85-year-old rapist at the Richards Bay Regional Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
Four years after his arrest, Alsom Zungu, received 15 years behind bars, for the rape of a 7-year-old orphaned girl in 2010.
He was arrested in November 2010 after a case of sexual assault was opened against him at KwaMbonambi police station.
During the trial, it was revealed that the pensioner took advantage of the child when no one was around.
She supposedly lived with her older brother when the incident occurred.
The girl’s sister also apparently felt ill and went blind during the overwhelming trial.
In her court statement the sister said the court case robbed her of her job in Durban and created health problems.
‘I was forced to quit my job because I had to come to court and also take care of my little sister. This changed my life because I developed heart problems and went blind for a while,’ she said in her statement.
Following the lengthy trial, the community welcomed the sentence.
