Customer shot in liquor store robbery

Man shot for R300 and a box of cigarettes outside KwaMbonambi

WHILE visiting his local liquor store on Tuesday, a man was shot when a robbery went wrong in the KwaMthethwa Reserve outside KwaMbonambi.

According to police, two males entered the store at around 2pm and asked the shop assistant for the price of beer and loose cigarettes.

But before she could respond, one of the suspects drew his firearm and ordered her as well as the shopper to lie down.

She complied, but the man refused and a scuffle ensued before the robber shot him twice in his stomach.

‘The suspects took an amount of R300 and one box of cigarettes,’ said KwaMbonambi SAP spokesperson, Lieutenant Aubrey Bongani Msane.

One man was arrested later the same day at the Nozambula Reserve and was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm with five rounds of ammunition.

His accomplice was caught on Wednesday.

Thokozani Mthethwa (29) and Kingdom Doctor Phoswa (25) appeared in court on Thursday on charges of business robbery, attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and burglary and theft.

Their case was remanded to 26 August pending the investigation.

The shooting victim is currently recovering from serious injuries at the Ngwelezane Hospital.
