ONLY a week after a grieving mother buried her six-year-old son, she bravely faced her child’s alleged killer this week.
Nonhlanhla Makhoba from uGobandlovu met with her accused boyfriend, Siphamandla Muhle Mabika (26), at the eSikhaleni police holding cells.
She told the Zululand Observer her boyfriend had called her on Friday, requested the meeting.
‘He said he wanted to explain why he killed my son,’ she said.
Separated by steel cell bars, Makhoba courageously sat in front of a man she once loved, seeking answers about her son’s death.
‘He said he couldn’t kill me because I had powerful ancestors. He wanted me to talk to the police and ask them to drop all charges.
‘Even though he apologised, I will never forgive him for what he did, and hope he rots in jail. Nothing will ever bring my son back and things will never go back to the way they were. If only he waited for me and killed me instead,’ a tearful Makhoba said.
The body of Thabiso (5) was found dumped inside an eSikhaleni mine property two weeks ago. He had been missing for three days before his body was recovered.
It was later discovered that his mother’s boyfriend had taken the boy after he had a fight with the mother.
Mabika handed himself over to the Empangeni Child Protection Unit three day later and the case was moved to the eSikhaleni police station.
Mabika appeared in the eSikhawini Regional Magistrate’s Court on Friday and the case was remanded to tomorrow (Friday).
