Bay school reopens after massive vandalism
Parents signed an agreement form permitting the school to take action against pupils involved in illegal activities

A WEEK after learning was interrupted at Ilizwi High School in eMandlanzi, the school’s governing body (SGB) reopened the school’s gates yesterday.
The decision to resume classes was taken during a special meeting between the ward councillor, SGB and parents on Friday.
Parents signed an agreement form permitting the school to take action against pupils involved in illegal activities.
Last week, the school property was badly damaged, leading to all class activities being terminated.
The school’s administration block, water system and toilets were badly destroyed.
School windows were smashed, water pipes ripped out and door handles removed. According to the principal, the school’s siren, printing equipment and telephone lines were also damaged.
A case was opened at the Richards Bay Police Station.
uThungulu District Education Director, David Chonco, visited the school last Tuesday and condemned the illegal act against school property.
He pleaded with community members to respect the institution as the community backbone and source of information.
‘I could never understand why people would damage a school that provide education to the community. We will not fix the school, until these people are found and brought to justice. We will assist the school with mobile toilets, repair the water system and provide them will some office supplies until the investigation is complete,’ said Chonco.
Richards Bay police spokesperson, Captain Debbie Ferreira, said the case of malicious damage to property was opened and the matter is being investigated.
No arrests were reported at this time.
