New intersection for ‘danger zone’

Mtubatuba interchange gets R200-million facelift.

THE notoriously dangerous Mtubatuba junction on the N2 is about to be given a much-needed revamp.

Civil work is set to start on the KwaBhoboza Intersection this week with plans to build a new underpass bridge, new on/off ramps as well as the widening of the national road within the vicinity of the crossing.

Construction will take place in stages starting with the ramps to accommodate traffic while the bridge on the N2 is being built.

The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL), spearheading the project, asked that motorists be patient and vigilant during the construction phase until the new intersection is officially opened in April 2016.

‘SANRAL requests motorists to observe the speed limits and exercise caution when travelling through the construction zone.

‘SANRAL apologises for any inconvenience that may be caused during the construction works.’

The entire project is estimated to cost R200-million and will generate about 150 employment opportunities at the peak of construction.

An overpass at Mtubatuba was deemed crucial after comprehensive traffic studies conducted in 2002 identified the area as a danger zone.

‘The high accident statistics together with long queues observed daily on main roads P484 and P237 make it essential to construct this interchange as SANRAL places a high premium on road safety,’ SANRAL said.
