Scrap metal thieves’ amazing haul

Abrupt end to post delivery in Alton.

SCRAP metal theft hit a new low and brazen high when a gang in Alton made off with an entire Post Office cluster box unit comprising 200 post boxes.

The entire structure was removed in broad daylight on Monday, leaving just the bare cement on which it had been mounted.

The post box centre, located on the corner of Geleiergang and Kabelkring, served businesses in the old section of Alton.

The culprits were seen at about 1pm loading the cluster unit onto a white Hilux bakkie that had no number plates.

‘One would hope that scrap metal dealers would not accept these post boxes and would alert the police if someone tried to sell them,’ said SAPS Richards Bay Communications Officer, Captain Debbie Ferreira.
