‘Project Dignity’ underway for high school pupils
Local organisation focuses on youth development.
AIMED at youth empowerment, LifeLine Zululand together with Richards Bay Minerals and BHP Billiton have rallied in support of ‘Project Dignity’ to address the issues facing young girls and boys.
Currently operative at Hluma High School and Sibonokuhle High School in eNseleni, LifeLine Zululand facilitators train local youth to assist with presentations addressing behavioural changes focussing on concerns surrounding teenage pregnancy.
‘We discuss inter-generational relationships commonly known as ‘sugar daddies’, abuse including substance abuse, menstruation, feminine hygiene and the like,’ said LifeLine Zululand Executive Director, Sue Stephenson.
‘We have joined three lots of funding to run the Project Dignity programme in the eNseleni area. Lotto funding is our largest one.’
A donation of R50 000 from Richards Bay Minerals and R150 000 from BHP Billiton were given in support of Project Dignity; as well as several packs of Subz washable sanitary pads by developer and owner, Sue Barnes.
‘Young girls in need also receive a Subz Pad and Panty pack which includes three pairs of panties, nine washable sanitary pads and nine sealable plastic bags to transport soiled pads in,’
‘One of these packs will last a girl for up to five years. She can thus receive the benefit of an uninterrupted education and take her rightful place, side by side with her male counterparts, in society,’ said Stephenson.
