A YOUNG mother’s worst nightmare became a reality when the body of her six-year-old son was found in the bushes in a mining lease area near eSikhaleni on Saturday.
Nonhlanhla Makhoba, told the Zululand Observer that her son, Thabiso went missing on Thursday, after she had had a fight with her boyfriend and moved out.
The distraught mother opened a missing person case at the eSikhaleni police station.
Makhoba explained she had stayed in an abusive relationship with her boyfriend, but decided to leave when he hit her. Never did she imagine what her estranged partner would do next.
‘We started searching for Thabiso, but later my boyfriend called me. He said he had taken my son and that the child would pay for my sins. I begged him to tell me where he was but he didn’t say. I went with the police to his brother’s house in eNseleni but he ran away,’ said Makhoba.
‘On Saturday, he called again. This time he told me he had killed Thabiso. He said he couldn’t kill me because I wouldn’t feel the pain. I pleaded for him to tell me where the body was and he later told me that he had dumped my son next to the pine trees in the mine property.’
eSikhawini SAPS and Child Protection Unit searched the mine late on Saturday, and found Thabiso’s body.
‘I couldn’t believe it, my son was lying dead in the bushes,’ said Nonhlanhla.
eSikhawini police spokesperson, Lt Thembinkosi Mkhumane said a huge manhunt was underway to find the child’s killer.
