Melmoth name change on the cards

Council is in the process of changing the name of the town of Melmoth.

A NAME change for the town of Melmoth is on the cards as a proposal of honouring 19th century Zulu King Cetshwayo kaMpande is being considered.

According to uThungulu District Municipal Mayor, Thembeka Mchunu, the council is in the process of changing the name of the town of Melmoth, named after the resident British Commissioner stationed there at the time, Sir Melmoth Osborn.

She hoped that this would happen before the end of the year.

Cetshwayo was the only king of the Zulu nation who faced the British in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879.

He was jailed on Robben Island when his forces were defeated.

He was the son of King Mpande who died in 1872 and half-nephew of King Shaka and grandson of Senzangakhona kaJama.

The king was restored to his throne after appeals to Queen Victoria, but was forced to flee in the face of civil war and died as a result of suspected poisoning.

The king was born in Mlambongwenya, near eShowe, and ruled during a troubled period in the history of his kingdom.
