Furious Pongola residents burn local court

Pongola community sets alight Ncotshane Magistrate’s Court.

THE fury of Pongola community members has turned the northern Zululand town into mayhem after a magistrate’s court was set alight last night.

In the latest unrest, it is suspected a petrol bomb was used to torch Ncotshane Magistrate’s Court at about 7pm. No arrests have been made but a case of arson is being investigated.

It is believed the building was set alight by irate community members following the arrest of 15 people for public violence earlier this week.

A special request was made by Acting KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, with the local magistrate for the arrested suspects to appear today in the Pongola Magistrate’s Court for public violence and not tomorrow.

A skull and a back bone skeleton were found on 8 July at the house of a woman at Ncotshane.

Her house was subsequently set alight but she was not injured.

Recovered bones were taken for analysis to establish if they were of a human being or not.

Investigations are ongoing.
