Parkinson’s disease support group formed

New community support group underway.

A SIMPLE act of kindness can be the spark that ignites a powerful blaze of hope.

The development of a support group for Parkinson’s disease sufferers in the area will see locals receive much needed support from willing community members.

This initiative has been spearheaded by Zululander Louise de Villiers. Recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, De Villiers has experienced first hand what it is like to face reality without having a clear sense of what is still to come or who she can turn to for assistance or support.

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder of the nervous system that gradually affects one’s movement.

It develops slowly over time, sometimes starting with a barely noticeable tremor in just one hand.

While many locals have fallen victim to the disease, most have felt the brunt with no shoulder to lean on.

In an attempt to create awareness and build a strong support system throughout the community, locals are encouraged to attend a monthly meeting held at the NG Kerk hall in Empangeni at 10.30 on the first Tuesday of every month.

Flyers will also be distributed throughout the community to educate locals about the disease and encourage possible victims to seek medical assistance.

The first meeting will be held on 5 August and locals are encouraged to attend.
