Zululand skies come alive with wings
Zululand pupils take to the skies for the first time.
THE windy skies of Zululand posed no deterrent as scores of people witnessed amazing aircraft action during the last leg of the KZN Winter Air Tour at Ulundi on Saturday.
With the country’s finest pilots on show, the air spectacle got underway with a free development programme for local youth.
Rural pupils were taught about the different facets of aviation and in association with Federal Airlines, were given an opportunity to fly for the first time.
More than 60 pupils took to the skies and pupil Ayanda Sibiya (10) of Jiyaza Primary School in Mahlabathini could not contain her emotions.
‘At first it was a mixed feeling of excitement and trepidation, but when I was in the air, it was all fine. I loved the training programme. If they can come back to give us more information on aviation, it will be much appreciated as we hardly see an airplane in our hometown.’
The opening parade featured heroes from local emergency services before parachute jumpers from the Durban Skydive Centre descended.
The aircrafts lit the sky with breathtaking acrobatic performances.
There were aerial displays, ridiculously fast jets, and a wide range of impressive acts from the Yak Attack, the MX2, Goodyear Eagles, Impala, Black Mamba and more.
