Life imprisonment for pensioner rapist
77-year-old grandfather sentenced to life behind bars.
A GLENDALE pensioner has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping his granddaughter.
The 77-year-old grandfather appeared in the KwaDukuza Regional Court on Thursday and was convicted and sentenced to life behind bars.
It is alleged that during January 2008 and February 2013, the grandfather repeatedly raped his 12-year-old granddaughter, gave her money and said he would kill her if she told anyone about it.
The girl was living with her grandparents at the time of the incident.
The matter was reported to Glendale police last year after the child’s aunt noticed the behaviour of the little girl and questioned her.
KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni welcomed the sentence given by the court.
‘Any man who can so brutally violate an innocent child deserves to be locked away in prison for the rest of his life,’ she said.
