City far off equity target
uMhlathuze must employ more Coloured, Indian and disabled persons.

THE City of uMhlathuze is progressing slowly with its employment equity policy.
Seeking for equitable representation of staff numbers, based on the Census 2011 results, numeric goals and targets have been set.
A progress report on last week’s Exco agenda pertaining to the third quarter of the financial year (1 Jan to 31 March 2014) revealed the following:
• The number of African (black) employees increased from 1 515 to 1 545
• The number of Coloured employees decreased from 15 to 14, leaving a gap of 22 to reach the goal of 35
• The number of Indian employees decreased from 72 to 71, leaving a shortfall of 136 to meet the goal of 202.
• The number of White employees decreased from 174 to 171 and must be reduced by a further 68 to reach the goal of 103.
As per Department of Labour requirements that 2% of staff should be in the disabled category, Council will have to increase from the present 11 to a total of 44 disabled persons.
