Hang out the clothing on the ZO line

Donate an item of clothing in support of Madiba Day.

IT’s time to join the ‘Hang Out With Madiba’ campaign on Friday 18 July.

The Zululand Observer’s charity, ‘Do I Care Enough?’ (DICE), will erect a washing line in front of the newspaper’s offices in Empangeni and at the Civic Centre in Richards Bay on Friday 18 July.

Everyone is encouraged to donate jackets, jerseys, scarves and beanies to peg on the line.

Last year, BHP Billiton in Richards Bay, came on board by erecting washing lines outside its two smelter sites as did a number of other companies in surrounding areas and companies are encouraged to participate again this year.

Service clubs, school children and business owners arrived at the Zululand Observer offices to peg jerseys, jackets, scarves and baby clothes onto the line to mark Nelson Mandela International Day, in this novel way.

More than 1 000 items of winter clothing was pegged onto the extra-long washing line in 2013 and the aim is to double this amount this year.

Washing lines in St Lucia and eShowe were just as busy with the Zululand Observer’s North Watch and Eyethu Baywatch driving the initiative in their areas with people coming out in the cold to show their support.

The clothing was donated to Crossroads Teen Centre in Empangeni, uThungulu Disaster Management and uMhlathuze Disaster Management the same day.

The original idea by the Zululand Observer team was an overwhelming success, with the community, local municipalities, businesses and organisations all supporting the innovative initiative.
