Zane Ison sets four new records at the second national powerlifting champs.
THERE’S no stopping local powerhouse and strongman Zane Ison, nicknamed Big Z.
Under new coach Donovan Morris, Big Z managed to beat his current GPC world records and set four new ones at the second national powerlifting championships held at Cornerstone College in Pretoria last weekend.
The event saw a total of 78 lifters from all over South Africa qualify for the sanctioned RPC competition, hosted by the Rhino Powerlifting Club.
The event saw international referee Gerry McNamara officially inspect and award the world records to the athletes.
Zane produced the following results:
• Set a new world record in the squatting section – 275kg to 330kg;
• New world record in the bench press section – 190kg to 197.5kg;
• New world record in deadlifts – from 285kg to 300kg;
• New total weight lifted record – 750kg to 827.5kg.
Ison will be jetting off to Argentina on 26 September to defend his world title and attempt to improve his current records at the 2014 World GPC Powerlifting Championships.
