Developing the game of rugby

Development rugby gets a young players on the field.

A TOTAL of 402 children attended the Supersport Let’s Play clinic at Mick Kelly Park on Friday morning.

Twelve schools from the Ndlangubo and Nseleni area sent pupils aged 9-12 to participate in the clinic.

The clinic started in Zululand in 2012, where U9 children were introduced to the game of rugby and taught the basic fundamentals.

Last year saw the same group of kids get introduced to tag rugby.

‘Today is phase four of the programme, where the tag rugby will carry on, but we will introduce contact to the kids.

‘Our aim is to play contact rugby by 2015 and introduce a league in these schools,’ said Zululand development rugby co-ordinator, Charles Mndaweni.

Later this year will see a district Tag Rugby Tournament, with the winner progressing through to Durban before moving onto national level.
