ALREADY traumatised mourners were forced to intervene to help a Richards Bay funeral parlour owner who was violently attacked by alleged employees of a rival funeral business during a cremation service at KwaDukuza on Saturday afternoon.
The undertaker was accosted in an office within the crematorium and struck numerous times with metal rods by two men believed to be employed by another funeral service company.
Two separate cremations were being conducted at the facility at thesame time.
No motive for the unexpected attack could be ascertained.
Requesting to remain anonymous, the owner said proceedings were violently disrupted when mourners from the funeral he was conducting had to rush to his aid and help him escape the assault.
‘I was leaving paperwork in the office when the two men walked in and attacked me from behind.
‘It happened so quickly. They were like hit men sent to kill me and they struck without warning, repeatedly hitting my face and head with the rods.
‘There were more than 200 bereaved mourners present and they watched in horror as the commotion unfolded.
‘It was heart-breaking for these people to endure further trauma brought about by this unnecessary act of violence.
‘The deceased’s wife rushed to my side to make sure I was fine and it really saddened me that her final farewell to her husband was violated by this incident,’ he said.
As the proceedings were disturbed and final arrangements still needed to be concluded, the young man was treated for his wounds at the scene and on his return to Richards Bay that evening, he opened a case of assault at the Richards Bay Police Station.
He confirmed he had previously received death threats, but this was the first time he was physically attacked.
