Happy Birthday, Sir

Richards Bay High School principal turns 60.

RICHARDS Bay High School Principal Chris van der Westhuizen turned 60-years-old on Monday.

In celebration of his milestone birthday, pupils of the school gathered on the field on Friday morning to surprise him.

‘Mr Chris van der Westhuizen, who is usually acutely aware of everything that happens in the school, was visibly surprised on when the pupils formed a huge 60 on the sports grounds to celebrate his birthday,’ said Richards Bay High School librarian, Hendrika Loock.

Welcomed with loud cheers, Mr van der Westhuizen was presented with personalised birthday cards from each register class while the Grade 11 Hospitality Studies class prepared delectable snacks and transformed the staff room where the staff entertained their principal after the day’s mid-year exam was written.

Mr van der Westhuizen was appointed as principal in 1993.

Apart from administrative duties of running the school, he continues to passionately teach mathematics and is actively involved in coaching cricket and volley ball.
