THE uThungulu District Municipality elected a new Speaker, Councillor Alice Mthembu, at Tuesday’s council meeting in Richards Bay.
This after a vacancy was declared with the resignation of former Speaker Musa Mzimel in March.
Mthembu served as the Acting Speaker for the past two months and hers was the only nomination that came from the floor and she was unanimously elected.
Council also accepted the resignation of Cllr Nonhlanha Cele as an Executive Committee (Exco) member. She will remain as an ordinary member of Council.
She has been replaced on Exco by Cllr Jabu Vilakazi.
