Remedial teachers to the rescue

Empangeni Remedial School receives level three first aid training.

Zululand Remedial Centre (ZRC) is coming to the rescue as staff members complete their level three in first aid

As a ‘Learners with Special Educational Needs’ (LSEN) school, ZRC deals with pupils with various learning barriers and medical conditions, such as epilepsy.

To ensure a quick and efficient response when a pupil becomes ill, the school decided to send staff to first aid training.

‘We believe that the quicker the response to assist the pupil, the less stressful it would be on the teacher and pupil,’ said ZRC Principal, Des Millin.

The staff attended a five-week training session on Saturdays from 8am to 3pm and Joseph Kruger, from Mounties, presented the training.

The school ensures that in each grade and in the administration, a staff member will be fully trained and qualified to assist in emergencies.

By the end of the training, which continues next term, all grades in the school will have a teacher qualified at level three first aid.

This also forms part of staff enrichment, which allows schools to empower teachers working with children to be equipped with the necessary first aid skills.
