Update: Municipality steps in to save boardwalk

Mayor hands over cheque for Dlinza Forest Aerial Boardwalk.

THE uMlalazi Municipality has approved a lifeline to the Dlinza Forest Aerial Boardwalk, thus preventing its closure.

At a public meeting last week, uMlalazi mayor, Cllr TB Zulu undertook to put the boardwalk on the agenda and forward a motion offering the management of the boardwalk a two-year lifeline of R150 00 per year.

The grant has however come with strict conditions including reports on transformation and other turnaround strategies to be implemented by the management committee.

Mayor Zulu said the two year period must be used by the management to find ways of making the facility self-sustainable.

He said the management cannot rely, or expect, the municipality to continue bailing out the boardwalk when in difficulties and it is for this reason that they have requested reports on progress.

The boardwalk is a popular birding destination, but with the decline in visitor numbers, the income has dropped dramatically over the last few months.
