A CRIMINAL facing more than six counts of robbery escaped from the Ngwelezane Magistrates Court yesterday.
Nkululeko Silo Masuku Dube (25) was in the dock, along with three co-accused, when he ran and jumped through the courtroom window.
The policeman on duty immediately opened fire and stopped the three other accused from running away, too.
Captain Mbongeni Mdalose of the Empangeni SAP told the Zululand Observer that Dube managed to escape through the burglar bars, jump over the wall and flee into the White City area in Ngwelezane.
‘The Empangeni Dog Unit and local police were immediately sent to comb the area and it was not long after, and the escapee was found in the bushes alongside a river in the White City area,’ said Mdlalose.
‘Dube was found covered in dirt and he had deep lacerations on his body. We are unsure how he obtained these injuries but it looks as if he could have been cut and hurt while trying to escape.
‘He is now under police guard at a local hospital,’ confirmed Mdlalose.
In addition to the existing robbery charges, Dube now faces an added charge for trying to escape from lawful custody.
