The Nqandi Centre was constructed after an analysis by the Mkhwanazi Traditional Authority identified it as a vital venue for the rural area.
‘During consultation meetings with the surrounding community of this site, it became clear there was an urgent need for such a facility, with no objections to the building of the centre,’ said Tronox KZN Sustainable Development Specialist, Annalien Fouché.
‘This centre comprises of a community hall in which meetings and functions can take place, a large kitchen and storeroom, a room for counselling and extra classes for senior students, as well as a crèche. The crèche will be registered with the Education Department and Social Welfare.’
Nqandi will also be used as a church facility.
‘Tronox remains involved with the establishing of the final committee, assisting them to understand the importance of taking care of the centre and running it as a sustainable business,’ said Fouché.
‘With further assistance from Tronox, a separate building on the same premises will be renovated and upgraded over the next month. This will serve as the office where all the administrative activities will take place.’
