Residents roll out clean-up project
Brackenham fathers fight drug and alcohol abuse in their community.
A GROUP of Brackenham fathers have taken up the challenge to tackle the scourge of drug and alcohol abuse negatively impacting families in the community.
Know as the Agents of Change (AOC) the residents, who have had personal insight on the impact of substance abuse on people, especially the youth; kicked off their first project on Sunday, hosting a family fun day and soccer tournament at the open space behind Brackenham Supermarket in Daisy Leaf road.
They have targeted hotspot areas where residents and youngsters loiter and dabble in illegal activities and want to erect mini sports fields in an attempt to deter mischievous behaviour.
The overgrown bushes and illegal dumping was cleared and a temporary recreational facility was erected with a mini soccer field and volleyball court.
Local businessman, Brian Chetty, said the project is being driven by residents who want to make a difference in the community and the focus is on promoting sport to deter youngsters from engaging in substance abuse.
‘Our launch event was well supported on Sunday as families joined in the activities with children enjoyed the jumping castles, tug-o-war and line up of fun games, while the youth and adults participated in the soccer and volleyball tournaments.
‘We see youngsters hanging around in the open spaces, engaging in illegal activities and we want this to stop.
‘This platform will also give us an opportunity to share our love for sport and some of our life experiences in the hope of encouraging them to abstain from destructive path of substance abuse.
‘As a business owner, we want to see the youth and community enjoy this facility and invite the public to support us as we drive the change we want to see in our area.’
