WHAT amazes me in Zululand is the total disregard for robots and stop signs.

Yet for budding motorists taking a driver’s licence test, stopping at traffic lights and doing a five-point check is crucial to pass.

It makes me wonder whether half of our drivers have really passed their driver’s licence tests.

Last week, we were travelling from Durban and entering Empangeni on the John Ross Parkway.

With the construction work and defective traffic lights, this intersection is treated as a four-way stop sign.

However, as we stop, wait our turn and get ready to move ahead, a taxi flies past us and goes across.

Besides the fact that it was not his turn, this could have resulted in a serious accident or worse – a fatal head-on collision.

This motorist did not pause or even yield at the stop sign but just accelerated past us.

Not forgetting that we are not allowed to yield at a stop sign but must stop as the sign says.

If we can all just adhere to the traffic regulations, we will be safe on our roads. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that we should stop at a stop sign and robot.

We should adopt the Australian demerit system where points are subtracted every time a motorist defaults.

If all points are subtracted, your licence is taken away.

If there are no harsh punitive measures, this type of behaviour will continue to prevail on our roads.

  1. Sorry to hear that Mr Zwane. However the Taxi driver was not doing 65km/h in 60km/h zone, therefore he was not speeding and could not have committed another offence because in richards bay all other traffic violations are ignored and only speeding is prosecuted.

  2. Set up cctv at these robots that’s out of order due to copper cable theft then you can catch these culprits also.
