Classic school clash produces great action
Grantleigh beats Felixton in winter sports day.
GRANTLEIGH’S sports fields were alive with action on Friday and Saturday during a classic schools derby clash, when Felixton College challenged them in Winter Sports.
Teams from U7 all the way up to U18 competed in rugby, hockey and netball over the two days.
The action hit off on Friday when all hockey games were played.
The first team boys (open age group) hockey game saw Felixton College dominate possession and territory, but fail to finish.
The home side’s defence was superb on the day, and the game ended in a goalless draw.
The first team (open age group) girls hockey clash was a cracker of an affair.
The home side took a 1-0 lead at half time, thanks to a great goal from Anja Timmerman.
But Felixton bounced back in the second half, with Hannah Bevis and Sethu Sithole each scoring for their side, which resulted in a 2-1 win for the visitors.
The action continued on Saturday with rugby and netball action entertaining the crowds.
With the bragging rights still up for grabs, Felixton came out firing on the netball courts to claim a 19-11 victory in the first team encounter.
With the overall scoreboard reading two and a half to a half in favour of Felixton, it was left to the Grantleigh rugby brutes to regain some pride, which they did when they drummed Felixton 62-5 in an U18 clash.
A well-drilled Grantleigh machine took to the rugby fields to settle matters, which resulted in them physically steam-rolling over a weak Felixton outfit to hand their side a historic victory.
The visitors were outplayed in all aspects of the game, but ill discipline did let the home side down at times.
In the end the scoreboard, after tallying all the sporting code results, read two and a half to one and a half to Felixton.
