Celebration of sound
Derek Fish mesmerizes the audience at Anchor Church in Mtunzini
THE hills were alive with the sound of music in Mtunzini as Anchor Church was full to capacity for an exciting presentation of sound and science.
Derek Fish, a music maestro, showcased 30 musical instruments from around the world and had the audience mesmerized.
His talk was augmented with live performances by a dazzling array of musicians.
These included pieces on the clarinet, violin, piano, flute, voice and bagpipes amongst others.
Star of the show was Nigel Fish from Pietermaritzburg, an international cellist who has played for 50 years, accompanied by his mother, Natalie who has played the piano for almost 90 years.
In addition, the Mtunzini Primary School Marimba Band provided some up-beat input.
Fish supplemented these with his own unique performances on the nose-flute, musical straw, hosepipe and duck.
This presentation was the third in an ongoing series on God and Science presented at Anchor Church.
Fish used Psalm 150 to illustrate the creativity and variety God wants us to bring to worship; stressing that there will be more than just harps in heaven.
Fish ended the evening sharing his testimony as a believing scientist, through the words of the well-known hymn: ‘How Great Thou Art!’ written by his great, great uncle.
The series will continue on the first Sunday of every month from 6 – 7.30pm at Anchor Church, 5 Williams Road, Mtunzini.
On Sunday 1 June you can look forward to: ‘In Glorious Technicolour’ – a sumptuous visual feast of demonstrations and explanations of how light and colour work.
