Off the chain: Should you gap it?

Pro's and cons of taking a gap year

THERE are multiple reasons why high school seniors decide to take that extra year off after school before taking that next big step.

Whether you are unsure of your future career path, or have the urge to travel the world, or even just feel you need that boost of confidence before entering the hustle and bustle of the ‘real world’, it is always good to know the pros and cons of ‘gapping it’!

Why you should ‘gap it’

A gap year can be very beneficial for those who have a set goal in mind. Taking a short break allows you to take a step back and redirect your path in life.

Getting involved in work experience can build knowledge, confidence and sometimes lead you on to a more exciting career path you might never have considered before.

Finding a part time job allows you to not only start saving your own money, but allows you to get the feeling of what it’s like being independent in the real world!

Although a gap year can benefit you, it can also become slightly misleading.

The cons

When you are faced with all that freedom after years of schooling, nasty habits can kick in.

You become demotivated and lazy which in time gets you out of focus.

You are not included in the social aspects involved with university and can sometimes feel like you’re missing out, which can lead to getting involved with the wrong crowds.

You may struggle to get back in to the study mode after your gap year and begin to resist the urge to go off to university, extending your year and losing motivation to want to further your studies.

When deciding whether to ‘gap it’ or go out and get started on your studies, always make sure you are mentally and emotionally prepared!

Never lose track of your goals in life and remember that the decisions you make now are the ones that determine your future!
