Widows explore business prospects
Turning ordinary rural women into business-minded entrepreneus.
WIDOWS were empowered to pursue entrepreneurial opportunities during the Rural Women’s Conference at the Es’kebheni Community Hall in uMlalazi.
Hosted by the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform, hundreds of women attended the event that focused on turning ordinary rural women into business-minded entrepreneus.
Guest speakers had a similar message of encouraging women to ‘get up and do things for themselves’.
Ward President Maureen Magubane emphasised that women in rural areas needed to own land, which would be a prime source of income if used for farming.
K Dlamini of the Widows Women of South Africa (WWOSA said widows did not need pity from anybody. She praised Inkosi Mzinela for giving 58 hectares of land to women for farming use. WWOSA is an initiative boasting 10 000 widows under its wing.
With more than 50 co-operatives in 99 Wards and an incentive of R900 per month to the members from the Independent Development Trust, WWOSA is making a difference to the many destitute women.
Minister of Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities, Lulama Xingwana, praised the work of WWOSA and promised to take their request for further support to ‘higher powers’.
