DOMESTIC violence in uMhlathuze has reared its ugly head this month with two local residents narrowly escaping death.
In one case, a Richards Bay woman, who had recently separated from her husband, became a victim of an onslaught that left her house in ruins with property damages amounting to R30 000.
She managed to get away with minor injuries and her husband was arrested for violating his restraining order.
However, the property owner said he is deeply troubled by domestic abuse running rife in town.
‘It’s important that a message be sent out about the severe consequences of an abusive relationship or marriage.
‘While people are in hot debate about the Oscar Pistorius case, there are serious cases of domestic violence happening right here in Richards Bay that needs the same attention.’
But Richards Bay SAPS spokesperson Debbie Ferreira said people should not assume that women and children are the sole victims in these cases.
‘Men are also often assaulted by their loved ones,’ said Ferreira.
‘On 1 April, a young Mandlazini man was severely assaulted by his girlfriend who poured boiled water over his face and body.
‘The SAPS arrested her and charged her with attempted murder.
‘It’s very important that those who find themselves in danger or under threat, report it to the SAPS.’
Ferreira said domestic violence not only includes physical violence, but also entails conduct that constitutes it.
According to the law, this involves anything from physical and sexual abuse to emotional, verbal and psychological abuse such as stalking.
Victims have the right to lay a criminal charge if the perpetrator committed an offence; apply for a protection order at the local Magistrate’s Court or lay a criminal charge and apply for a protection order.

If more victims report the assault, you wouldn’t believe it. Stop advertising alcohol – biggest culprit of domestic violence.
