New Speaker for uThungulu

Seasoned female activist elected as uThungulu Acting Speaker.

COUNCILLOR Alice Mthembu has stepped in as Acting Speaker of the uThungulu District Municipality.

This comes after former Speaker, Cllr Musa Mzimela, exited the municipality last month after moving to uMkhanyakude.

Chairperson of the ANC Women’s League in the Musa Dladla Region, Mthembu was appointed as an uMhlathuze Councillor in 2003 and in 2011 served as an Exco member.

It is her vision to see the lives of local community members improved in terms of service delivery.

‘I would like to see peace in our district with all political parties working together to serve our community,’ Mthembu said.

Being an active member of the Women’s League since 1993, she is passionate about empowering women with skills and opportunities.

She also believes one of the most serious challenges facing the youth is responsible behaviour.

‘Teenage pregnancies lead to an increase in HIV/Aids and we are working on strategies to address this problem. We need to have 365 drug-free days and no violence against women and children.’

She was married to Bheki Mthembu, a member of the KZN provincial Legislature, who was gunned down at Gingindlovu in 1998.
