Bandile holds on to study dreams

Six distinctions for top achiever but no funds for tertiary education

BANDILE Sinenhlanhla Myeni, a Class of 2013 pupil from Kingdom Christian College (KCC) in Mtubatuba, was easily KCC’s top achiever last year when she was awarded an outstanding six matric distinctions.

With a knack for the sciences and accounting, Myeni’s distinction subjects included mathematics, accounting, economics and physical science. Although always a hard-working pupil with a history of academic achievement, Myeni’s distinctions came as a surprise even to her.

After applying to a number of universities, including University of Cape Town (UCT), Stellenbosch and Wits, to study industrial engineering, Myeni found herself accepted to more than one. Once her results were in, Myeni’s place at her chosen university would be confirmed, subject to funding. To her dismay, Myeni’s father, who works at the Mtubatuba sugar mill, is unable to pay the full tuition fees at any of her chosen universities and she hasn’t, as yet, been able to qualify for a bursary. After managing to pay the registration fees, Myeni’s father was at least able to send her to her first choice, Stellenbosch University, but paying tuition fees still presents a financial dilemma.

Myeni is studying mechatronics and hasn’t given up hope of a bursary. Without this option, she may lose out on a tertiary education and her chosen career, while the country could lose out on a talented, homegrown individual in the engineering sector.
