THERE is now a way of beefing up one’s CV more than just recording good marks.

Grantleigh matric student Megan Sutherland is the perfect example of this prestigious and beneficial programme – the President’s Award.

This extra-curricular activity entails learning a new skill, showing improvement in a sport and also doing community service.

Each level has an allotted time frame an allotted number of hours of community service to be completed. It also includes an adventurous journey.

After hearing about the opportunity to complete the programme from one of the teachers at Grantleigh, Mrs Waldapfel, Megan decided to jump at the chance and complete not only her bronze level, but also her silver level (the highest level is gold), in two years.

For her bronze level, Megan learnt pottery and played hockey.

For her silver, she used her Advanced Programme Maths as a skill, as well as piano lessons.

For her sport she went for swimming training.

Her community service was done at institutions such as AWOL, hospitals and school-run activities.

Her adventurous journeys were school-organised camps.

Asked what the hardest part of the President’s Award was, Megan said community servicesince it is difficult to find time to complete all the hours, and it is also hard to find so many different places at which to work.

However, community service was her favourite part, as it was fulfilling and made her realise how ‘something small can mean so much to people’.
