CLEAN-UP operations continued through the night after thousands of litres of oil spilled into the harbour yesterday following an Engen delivery pipe burst in the early hours on Monday morning.
Kilometres of sensitive coastline, including the entire Casuarinas beach section, were covered in thick, black oil.
While the spill originated on the coal terminal side of the port, the south-westerly wind had carried the oil across the harbour.
Fears are that should the wind change to north-easterly, the oil will contaminate sensitive mangrove beds on the south ‘mud flats’ end of the harbour.
Engen have not yet issued a statement.
Good day, due to the devastating environmental impact the oil would surely have on the marine and surrounding areas , I suggest for a very effective and efficient way to help with the current oil spoil is to call out to your local schools to help with the clean up. They would be more than willing to help, the children would learn a lot and every body would benefit from the excursion. Just a thought. The local university would also be willing to help as honour students are always looking for a project therefore free and effective scientific analysis and feedback can be obtained readily and discretely with no cost

First time reading, very good. I’m still unaware of what harbor is involved. I live in the Free State.
