THREE white rhino were reported killed in Zululand game reserves during the weekend.
One was found on Friday at the Ozabeni section at iSimangaliso Wetland Park.
‘Earlier, field rangers had heard gun shots and rushed to the scene; unfortunately the poachers escaped with the horns,’ said Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife spokesperson Musa Mntambo.
‘Post-mortem results indicated that the shot was fired by the poacher who was shot dead by rangers on 18 March. The poacher had used an R1 rifle.
Mntambo said a helicopter pilot on Sunday spotted two white rhino carcasses at Makhandendlovu in the Masinda section of the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park.
The carcasses were about three days old and .458 cartridges were found near the scene.
