A RICHARDS Bay family held against their will, assaulted and verbally harassed inside a business premises in Alton, are still coming to terms with their traumatic experience.
Resident Kandace Reddy and her family attempted to report a reckless truck driver at a business in Alton and were allegedly accosted by a group of drivers.
They were returning from a church service in the Richards Bay central business district at about 11.30am and had to avoid a collision with a truck, allegedly owing to reckless driving.
Reddy said her nine-year-old daughter was still traumatised by the incident, which unfolded after they stopped at the truck company to report the incident.
The truck driver is alleged to have been speeding and ignored the yield sign, failing to slow down or stop for traffic.
‘We noted the trucking company’s details on the vehicle and then pulled up to their premises in Alton to report the incident to the fleet controller.
‘There was no-one we could speak to and as my fiancé got back into the vehicle to leave the premises, the truck driver who had also driven into the yard, walked over and began attacking him.
‘He chased my fiancé out of the premises and proceeded to hit and kick our male relative who was with us in the vehicle.
‘My daughter burst into tears and I jumped into the front seat of the car to try and drive off.
‘The driver demanded the keys, opened the bonnet and tampered with something, but I managed to call my mother and get the police to the scene,’ she said.
The matter was reported at the Richards Bay Police Station and a case was opened.
