Journeying with God

‘Even if a door closes, God can open a window’ – Empangeni author Nomusa Jila

FAILING to complete tasks, one can easily be labelled a failure.

‘But I wasn’t a failure,’ said Nomusa Jila and ‘I refused to label myself a failure.’

The 43-year-old Empangeni author has just launched a spiritually inspired book, based on her journey of self-discovery and growth.

Admitting to ‘starting life now’, the wife, mother, counsellor and student at 40 said, ‘Nothing is impossible in life if you keep pushing.’

Entitled ‘My Journey with God’, Nomusa said, despite her morally-sound Christian upbringing, she somehow had lost her focus after matriculation.

‘I knew there was a God but I never came into contact with Him,’ said Nomusa. ‘And through this journey, I began to see myself in His eyes.’

Born in Kwa-Ngwanase in Maputaland, Nomusa had dreams of becoming a journalist. After one year she dropped out of a tertiary institution and life took a surprising detour when she fell pregnant.

But marriage was the beginning of another level of maturity.

‘This is when I started to grow and experience reality. Life on its own is a journey, but marriage is another journey, with two different people beginning a life together. Life as a married woman has challenges.’

For Nomusa, the fear of failure still lurked.

‘I was always seen as a person who could not complete stuff. I wanted to show everyone that I could do something and complete it. God does not want us to quit but he wants us to persevere and He won’t just leave us alone. I did not have the finances to publish my book but God made a way.’

Hope

After three beautiful children – a daughter and two sons, Nomusa believes that when one door closes, God opens another.

‘I just completed my degree in Communication Science last year and I have also been an HIV/Aids counsellor.

‘This field has opened my eyes further and I have learnt not to judge people by how you see them. I have counselled couples and individuals with diverse problems. People generally have lost hope in life. I want to share my journey with God with countless people. I was pushed by my circumstances.’

She is already working on her next book entitled ‘Marriage: a choice, sacrifice and commitment’.
