A 20-year-old Mevamhlope man, Nkululeko Khumalo, was chased and arrested for theft, 500m from the Empangeni Police Station last week.
Khumalo had been walking down Main Road, adjacent to the Empangeni Police Station, when a white 1.4 Bantam bakkie stopped at a red robot.
Khumalo then stretched over and stole a heavy duty extension cord out the back of the bakkie and started running.
Officers standing outside the police premises witnessed the theft and gave chase. Khumalo was caught, arrested and charged for theft out of a motor vehicle.
Khumalo appeared at the Empangeni Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
The driver who pulled off once the robot turned green, was unaware of what had happened.
Empangeni SAPS Spokesperson Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose and his team have no registration for the vehicle from which the item was stolen.
‘We are calling on the owner to collect his property at the Empangeni Police Station and we are also sending out a warning to other criminals informing them that we are keeping an eye on them,’ said Mdlalose.
