According to police, the driver of the vehicle was travelling on the R102 from Mandeni towards KwaDukuza when another vehicle cut him off in Darnall.

Three armed men confronted him and took his vehicle.

Police and security companies were alerted, and information was shared on their social media chat groups, which led to the close monitoring of all possible escape routes.

The two vehicles were soon spotted at a sugarcane field in Newark, where the robbers were in the process of changing the vehicle’s registration plates.

‘The suspects took the R102 northbound route and were spotted near the Mtunzini turn-off, and they were intercepted at Nsiwa Reserve.

After an exchange of gunfire, two suspects, aged 25 and 34, were arrested.

‘They were found in possession of a firearm with 14 rounds of ammunition and a toy gun,’ said KZN SAPS spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala.
The 34-year-old suspect appeared in the Mtunzini Magistrate’s Court earlier today (Wednesday) for being in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

Both men will also appear in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court soon, facing charges of carjacking.
