Once-off travel allowance ends at midnight tonight

Those who found themselves outside their places of work were given from 1 to 7 May to return

THE once-off allowance of movement of people who were not at their places of residence or work when the lockdown commenced, will end at midnight tonight (Thursday).

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula earlier urged motorists not to leave their transit to the last minute, and to refrain from speeding as the grace period for travel between provinces, metropolitan and district areas comes to an end.

Those who found themselves outside their places of work were given from 1 to 7 May to return to those provinces without having to obtain and produce a permit.

‘A directive was issued to allow long distance buses, taxis and private vehicles to travel outside the 8pm curfew, but that allowance comes to an end at midnight.

‘Law enforcement officials will be out and about, ensuring road safety and compliance to lockdown rules and regulations.

‘We urge road users to travel with care, sanitise their vehicles, wear face masks, not exceed the required carrying capacity and drive safely.

‘Road safety remains paramount, even during the Covid-19 crisis,’ said Mbalula.
