TODAY is Cartoonist Day, a weird and funky celebration on the calendar initiated by members of the National Cartoonists Society, led by Ken Alvine.
Cartoonist Polly Keener and creator of the comic strip, ‘Hamster Alley’, is the major promoter for Cartoonist Day.
The day was first celebrated on 5 May 1999 to commemorate the first publication of the groundbreaking comic strip ‘Hogan’s Alley’, featuring the ‘Yellow Kid’.

Cartoons have always brightened up peoples lives, so it is only fitting that we have a day like this to celebrate past, present and future cartoonists.
From Sponge Bob Squarepants, to Bart Simpson and Mickey Mouse, cartoons make us smile and feel good.
The first cartoon character was introduced in 1895 by Richard F Outcault.
The ‘Yellow Kid’ character appeared in publisher Joseph Pulitzer’s New York World, running from 1895 to 1898.
This bald kid in a yellow nightshirt later appeared in William Randolph Hearst’s New York Journal.
