TWELVE Apostels Church leader, Mphostoli Khumalo, says church members cannot be allowed to live like animals.
He intervened to help a destitute Mathunzi Reserve family in Mandeni last Monday, by housing them in a temporary one-room unit.
During a food parcel handover to Jabu Mkhwanazi’s family by Mandeni Municipality officials, Khumalo said it was disappointing to discover that some people still live in mud houses so many years after democracy.
‘This family are with us at the church and it’s shocking to see the condition of their house. Our people are suffering.’
Mandeni Mayor, Thabani Mdlalose, urged the business sector and individuals to support needy families.
‘This should not only be a government initiative, communities should also participate in helping one another.
‘The process of building a proper house for the Mkhwanzi family is under way through the Operation Sukuma Sakhe programme.
‘It has been approved and everything now rests with the Department of Human Settlement,’ he said.
Ward 6 councillor, Mbongeni Cele, said he submitted all the details to the department, but no progress has yet been made.
